At the risk of sounding ancient, I remember fondly the days when our spare time as kids was spent, not on computer games, but on good old fashioned fun such as art. We made art out of anything we could find. Drawing was always good fun, but give us some sellotape and a few bits of cardboard and we would spend hours making cartoon characters or collages.
The good thing was that you did not have be good at art, you just had to enjoy it. We spent hours watching Rolf Harris and other art programmes and taking inspiration – even if our finished efforts looked nothing like old Rolf could produce.
We took toilet rolls and cereal packets, we used old bits of anything we could find around the house. We cut and snipped, glued and stuck until we came up with something that we were really proud of.
Our mums and dads had to display our artwork around the home, and gratefully receive them as presents at Christmas and I still have trinkets that my son made as a kid.
The great thing was that art was a hobby that could be enjoyed by the whole family, by all ages and all skill levels and it inspired us to do better each time and made us use our imaginations.
